Solving by Factoring

Throughout this section, we have learnt how to factor many different things. For example, we have touched upon how to factor both simple and complex trinomials. In addition, we have also gone through the method of factoring perfect squares and difference of squares. However, in this section, we will be specifically focusing on how to solve equations with the help of factoring. Essentially, we will be learning how to find our x-intercepts for the given equation. Please look below to learn how to solve by factoring.

STEPS: Solving By Factoring (in general):

  1. Optional: If the equation does not equal to 0, then you have to make it equal to 0, before you start to factor it. The way you make the equation equal to 0 is by moving the term (whatever the equation equals to) to the other side by cancelling it out. Then, once this step is completed, make sure to simplify the equation.

  2. Factor the equation through the appropriate method of factoring.

  3. Set each factor equal to 0.

  4. Solve for the missing variable values.
