Multiplying Binomials (Expanding)

 

Before we begin to dive into learning how to factor, we first need to understand how to multiply binomials. Understanding this concept will allow you to form a strong and firm foundation, before learning how to factor. Furthermore, since factoring is one of the key concepts taught in the quadratics unit, it is essential for us to learn how to multiply binomials, as it is the basis to factoring. STEPS TAKEN TO EXPAND (with respect to the example given above):

 

  1. Multiply the term "n" which lies in the first bracket, with all the other terms which lie in the second bracket.

  2. Multiply the term "2" which lies in the first bracket, with all the other terms which lie in the second bracket.

  3. Collect like terms.

  4. Write your answer in order from the greatest to smallest degree of power. 

 

 

STEPS TAKEN TO EXPAND (in genereal):

 

  1. Multiply each term in the first bracket, with each term in the second bracket.

  2. Collect the like terms. 

  3. Write your answer in order from the greatest to smallest degree of power.
